                     Volta Basin Observatory: Status of Mapping in the Basin Discussed

Within the framework of the implementation the Observatory for Water Resources and Associated Ecosystems of the Volta Basin, VBA organized the first Regional Forum on Cartography in Ouagadougou from 30th to 31st March 2010.
This initiative is part of the VBA’s efforts to establish operational tools and a system for facilitating efficient management of water resources in the Volta basin.

The permanent members of the Observatory Project Steering Committee, observers and Directors General or Directors of the National Cartographic Centers or their representatives discussed a partnership and coordination process among the producers of basic cartographic data and VBA with respect to the mandates of each party, in order to among others:
-Enable VBA to take advantage of national base cartographic data, especially in digital format, to promote the transfer and exchange of experiences among the various National Cartographic Institutions and VBA,
-Increase, through collaboration, use and dissemination of products developed by VBA and its partners (Atlases, geo-referenced base maps) for the benefit of decision makers in the VBA Member-Countries,
-Develop future collaborative projects.

At the end of the forum, recommendations were made on harmonizing cartographic production, making available the products to VBA, and implementing national and regional mapping projects.
